This morning I gazed into the future of the world
Behind the trusting eyes of my little girl
A future filled with hope for the coming year
Behind a small brow furrowed in fear
Of the future. . . and troubled eyes said
Please fix my world while you have the chance
Please don't leave my future up to circumstance
Make sure I have enough fresh water to drink
Clean air to breathe and freedom to think
For myself. . . and my future
Today I saw the future behind thirty pairs of eyes
Thirty young children trusting me with their lives
Assigned to my classroom by chance for a year
Thirty small brows furrowed in fear
Of the future. . . and troubled eyes said
Please fix our world while you have the chance
Please don't leave our future up to circumstance
Make sure we have enough fresh water to drink
Clean air to breathe and feedom to think
For ourselves. . . and our future
Bless the beasts and the children, forbid them not
For the highest price their future has been bought
Please help fix our world while we have the chance
Don't leave our planet's future up to circumstance
Make sure there is enough fresh water to drink
Clean air to breathe and freedom to think
About what matters. . . for the future
Future *
* Inspired by the “reverence for life” philosophy of Albert
Schweitzer. Dedicated to Jacques Yves Cousteau, Al
Gore, Melissa Etheridge. . . and our future.
