Good News According to John [ a translation from the Greek ] Chapter 5 After these things, there was a feast of the Jews and Jesus went up into Jerusalem. Moreover, by the sheep gate in Jerusalem, there is a pool with five porches called Bethesda. In these were a lying a multitude who were sick; blind, lame and paralyzed, awaiting the moving of the water. Indeed, a messenger during a season, descended into the pool and stirred the water. One who first entered after the stirring of the water, was made well from whatever disease they had at the time. Moreover, a certain man being ill, was there thirty-eight years by himself. Jesus seeing him and already knowing he had been there a long time, he said to him, "do you desire to become well?" The sick man answered him, "sir, I do not have a man that when the water has been stirred, to put me into the pool, moreover, when I am coming, another descends before me. Jesus said to him, "arise, take up your mat and walk." And the man immediately became well and took up his mat and walked. Moreover, on that day it was the Sabbath [Saturday]. Therefore, the Jews said to him who had been healed, "it is the Sabbath and not lawful for you to take up your mat. However, he who was healed said "he who made me well, he said to me, "take up your mat and walk." Therefore, they asked him, "who is the man who said to you, 'take up your mat and walk?'" Moreover, the man who had been healed did not know who it was; for Jesus had moved away, a crowd being in the place. After these things, Jesus found him in the temple and said to him, "look, you have become well, sin no more, that something worse happens to you." The man went away and told the Jews, it was Jesus who made him well. And because of this the Jews persecuted Jesus, because he did these things on the Sabbath. However, Jesus answered them, "my father works until now and I work." Because of this, the Jews sought the more to kill him, because not only did he break the Sabbath but also, he called God his own father, making himself equal to God. Therefore, Jesus answered and said to them, "Truly, truly I say to you, the son is able to do nothing, if it is not anything he might see the father doing; for whatever he does, these things also does the son. "For the father loves the son and shows him all things that he does. And greater works than these he will show him, so that you might wonder. For indeed, as the father raises up the dead and gives life, so also the son gives life to whom he will. For not even the father judges anyone, but has given all judgment to the son, so that all might highly value the son, even as they highly value the father. "He who does not highly value the son, does not highly value the father who sent him. Truly, truly I say to you, those who hear my word and believe him who sent me, have eternal life and do no come into judgment, but have passed out of death into life. Truly, truly I say to you, that an hour comes and now is, when the dead will hear the voice of the son of God and, those having heard will live. "As indeed, the father has life in himself, so also he gave life to the son, to have in himself. And he gave to him authority to execute judgment, because he is the son of man. Marvel not at this, for an hour is coming in which all those in the tombs will hear his voice and come forth; those who practiced good to a resurrection of life and those who did evil to a resurrection of judgment. "I am able to do nothing of myself. As I hear I judge and my judgment is righteous, because I do not seek my own will, but the will of him who sent me. If I bear witness about myself, the testimony is not true. It is another who testifies about me and I know the witness which he witnesses about me is true. You have sent unto John and of the truth, he has born witness. "Moreover, I receive the witness not from people, but I say these things that you might be saved. He was the lamp, burning and shining; moreover, you were willing to rejoice for an hour in his light. However, I have the witness greater than that of John. For the works that my father gave me, that I should bring them to full development. The same works which I do bear witness about me, that the father has sent me. "And the father himself, the one who sent me, has borne witness about me. You have heard neither the voice of him at any time, nor seen his form. And you do not have his word remaining in you, for you do not believe him who sent me. You search the scriptures, for in them you think to have eternal life; and these are they which bear witness about me. And you are not willing to come to me, that you might have life. "I do not take glory from people. But I have known you, that the love of God you do not have in yourselves. I have come in the name of my father and you do not receive me. If another should come in their own name, him you will receive. How are you able to believe, receiving glory from one another and you seek not the glory which is from the only God?" "Do not think that I will accuse you to the father. There is one who accuses you, Moses, in whom you have hoped. For if you believed Moses, you would believe me, for about me he wrote.
