Good News According to John

[ a translation from the Greek ]

Chapter 13

Now, before the feast of the Passover, Jesus being aware that his hour had come, that he should depart out of this world to the father; who had loved his own who were in the world, he loved them to the end. And supper having begun, the devil had already put into the inward being of Judas Iscariot, son of Simon, that he should betray him.

Having seen that the father has given all things into his hand and, from God he came out and to God he was going, he rose from the supper and laid aside his garments.

And having taken a towel, he girded it around himself. After that, he poured water into the basin and he began to wash the feet of the followers and to wipe them with the towel with which he was girded.

Then he came to Simon Peter, who said to him, "Lord, do you wash my feet?"

Jesus answered and said to him, "You don't understand what I do now, but you will know later."

Peter said to him, "No, you may not ever wash my feet."

Jesus said to him, "If I don't wash your feet, you haven't any part with me."

Simon Peter said to him, "Lord, not my feet only, but also my hands and head!"

Jesus said to him, "One who is completely washed need only to wash their feet and are fully clean. And you are clean, but not all."

For he knew who would betray him. On account of this he said, "You are not all clean."

Now, when he had washed their feet and put on his garments and had again sat down, he said to them, "Do you understand what I have done to you? You call me teacher and Lord and, you say rightly, for I am.

"Therefore, if I the Lord and teacher have washed your feet, you ought also to wash the feet of each other. I gave a pattern for you, that as I did to you, you also should do. Truly, truly, I say to you, a servant isn't greater than his master, nor a messenger greater than he who sent the messenger.

"If you know these things, blessed are you if you do them. I don't speak about all of you. I know whom I chose, but that the scripture might be fulfilled, he who eats my bread lifted up his heel against me. Presently, I am telling you before it happens, so that when it happens, you might believe that I am.

"Truly, truly, I say to you, those who receive any I will send, receive me. Moreover, those who receive me receive him who sent me."

Having said these things, Jesus was troubled in spirit and testified and said, "Truly, truly, I say to you, that one of you will betray me."

The followers looked at each other, being uncertain of whom he was speaking.

There was one of his followers reclining in the bosom of Jesus, whom Jesus loved. Then Simon Peter made a sign to him and told him to ask whom it was he was speaking about. He then having fallen back on the breast of Jesus, said to him, "Lord, who is it?"

Then Jesus answered, "It is he to whom I having dipped the morsel and will give him."

Then having dipped the morsel, he gave it to Judas Iscariot, son of Simon. And after the morsel, then Satan entered into him.

Then Jesus said to him, "What you do, do quickly."

Now of those reclining, no one knew about what he spoke to him. For some thought since Judas had the money bag, that Jesus said to him, buy what things we have need of for the feast or, that he should give something to the poor.

Therefore, having received the morsel, he went out immediately. Now, it was night.

So, when he had gone out, Jesus said, "Now the son of man is glorified and God has been glorified in him. If God is glorified in him, God will also glorify him in himself and will immediately glorify him.

"Little children, I am yet with you a little while. You will seek me and as I said to the Jews, where I go you aren't able to come, I also say to you now.

A new commandment I give to you, that you should love each other. As I have loved you, so also you should love each other. In this will all know that you are my followers, if you have love among each other."

Simon Peter said to him, "Lord, where are you going?"

Jesus answered him, "Where I go you aren't now able to follow. But afterwards, you will follow."

Peter said to him, "Why am I not able to follow you presently? I will lay down my life for you."

Jesus answered, "Will you lay down your life for me? Truly, truly, I say to you, no, the rooster won't crow until that you will deny me three times."
