Good News According to John

[ a translation from the Greek ]

Chapter 8

Early in the morning, he came then again into the temple and all the people came to him. And having sat down, he was teaching them. Now the scribes and the Pharisees brought a woman to him having been caught in adultery.

And having set her in the midst, they said to him, "Teacher, this woman was caught committing adultery, in the very act. Now, Moses in the law commanded us that such should be stoned. So, what do you say?"

Now, this they said testing him, that they might have something to accuse him.

But Jesus having stooped down, wrote with his finger on the ground. Now, as they continued asking him, having lifted himself up, he said to them, "The one who is sinless among you, let him cast the first stone."

And having stooped down again, he wrote on the ground. And having heard and by conscience being convicted, they went out one by one, beginning from the older ones until the last. And Jesus and the woman standing in the midst were left alone.

Jesus, having lifted himself up and seeing no one but the woman, said to here, "Woman, where are they who accuse you? Has no one condemned you?"

And she said, "Sir, no one."

And Jesus said to her, "Neither do I condemn you. Go and from now on, sin no more."

Therefore, Jesus again spoke to them saying, "I am the light of the people. Those who follow me will no longer walk in the darkness, but have the light of life."

Then the Pharisees said to him, "You bear witness about yourself, your testimony isn't true."

Jesus answered and said to them, "Even if I bear witness about myself, my testimony is true, because I know where I came from and where I am going.

"But you cannot know where I come from or where I am going. You judge according to the flesh. I judge no one. And, but if I judge, my judgment is true. I am not alone, but I and the father who sent me.

"And in your law it also has been written, that of two men, the testimony is true. I am who testifies about myself and bears witness about me; and the father who sent me bears witness about me."

And they said to him, "Where is your father?"

Jesus answered, "You know neither me nor my father. If you had known me, you would have also known my father."

These words he spoke in the treasury, teaching in the temple. And no one seized him, for his hour hadn't yet come.

Then again he said to them, "I go away and you will seek me and you will die in your sins. Where I go, you are unable to come."

So the Jews said, "Will he kill himself, that he says, 'Where I go, you are unable to come?'"

And he said to them, "You are from below, I am from above. You are of this world, I am not of this world. Therefore, I said to you that you will die in your sins, if you don't believe that I am, you will die in your sins."

Then they said to him, "Who are you?"

Jesus said to them, "I say to you what I also said from the beginning. I have many things to say about you and to judge. But he who sent me is true; and what I heard from him, these things I say to the people."

They didn't know that he spoke to them about the father.

Then Jesus said to them, "When you will have lifted up the son of man, then you will know that I am and do nothing of myself, but as the father taught me, these things I speak. And he who sent me is with me. He hasn't left me alone, because each time I do the things pleasing to him."

Of him speaking these things, many believed in him.

Then Jesus said to the Jews who had believed in him, "If you remain in my word, you are truly followers of me. And you will know the truth and, the truth will set you free."

To him they answered, "We are seed of Abraham and to no one have ever been under bondage. How do you say that you will become free?"

Jesus answered them, "Truly, truly, I say to you, everyone who practices a sin is a slave to the sin. Now, the slave doesn't remain in the house forever; but the son remains forever. Therefore, if the son will set you free, you will be truly free.

"I know that you are seed of Abraham, but you seek to kill me because my word has no place in you. That which I have seen with the father, I also speak to you. So, what you have heard from the father, also do."

They answered and said to him, "Abraham is our father."

Jesus said to them, "If you were children of Abraham, you would do the works of Abraham. But now you seek to kill me, a man who has spoken to you the truth that I heard from God. Abraham didn't do this. You are doing the works of your father."

Then they said to him, "We haven't been born of sexual immorality, we have one father, God."

Jesus said to them, "If God was your father, you would have loved me. For I came forth from God and am here. For not even of myself I have come, but he sent me. Why don't you understand because of my speech? Because you aren't able to hear my word.

"You are of your father, the devil and, the lust of your father, you desire to do. He was a murderer from the beginning and hasn't stood in the truth, because the truth isn't in him. Whenever he might speak falsehood, he speaks from his own, for he is a liar and the father of it.

"But because I speak the truth, you don't believe me. Which of you convicts me about sin? Because I speak the truth, why don't you believe me? He who is of God hears the words of God. Because of this you don't hear, because you are not of God."

The Jews answered and said to him, "Don't we rightly say you are a Samaritan and have an evil spirit?"

Jesus answered, "I don't have an evil spirit, but I highly value my father and you dishonor me. But I don't seek my own glory. There is one who seeks and judges. Truly, truly, I say to you, if anyone keeps my word they won't ever see death, forever."

Then the Jews said to him, "We know now that you have an evil spirit. Abraham died and the prophets. And you say, 'If anyone keeps my word, they won't ever taste of death, forever.' Are you greater than our father Abraham who died? And the prophets died. Whom do you make yourself?"

Jesus answered, "If I may glorify myself, my glory is nothing; it is my father who glorifies me, of whom you say that he is your God. And you haven't known him. But I know him. If I say that I do not know him, I will be like you, a liar. But I know him and I keep his word. Your father Abraham rejoiced that that he should see my day and, he saw and rejoiced."

So the Jews said to him, "You aren't yet fifty years old and you have seen Abraham?"

Jesus said to them, "Truly, truly I say to you, before Abraham was born, I am."

Then they picked up stones that they might cast at him. But Jesus hid himself and went forth out of the temple; going through the midst of them and thus, passed by.
