Good News According to John

[ a translation from the Greek ]

Chapter 3

Moreover, now there was a man out of the Pharisees named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews. By night he came to him and said to him, "teacher, we know that you are a teacher having come from God. For no one is able to do these signs that you do, if God is not with him." Jesus answered and said to him, "truly, truly, I say to you, if anyone is not born from above, they cannot see the kingdom of God."

Nicodemus said to him, "How can one be born, being old? Can they enter into the womb of the mother and be born a second time?" Jesus answered, "truly, truly, I say to you, if one is not born of water and of spirit, they are not able to enter the kingdom of God. That which is born of the flesh is flesh and that which is born of the spirit is spirit. Wonder not that I said to you, it is needful for you to be born from above.

"The wind blows where it wishes and you hear the sound of it, but do not know where it comes from and where it goes, thus is everyone who has been born of the spirit." Nicodemus answered and said to him, "how can these things be?" Jesus answered and said to him, "you are the teacher of Israel and do not know these things? Truly, truly, I say to you, that which we know we speak and that which we have seen, we bear witness to and, you do not receive our witness.

"If I have said to you earthly things and you do not believe, how will you believe if I say to you heavenly things? And no one has gone up into heaven, if not the son of man who came down out of heaven, who is in heaven. And exactly according, as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, thus, it is necessary for the son of man to be lifted up; so that everyone who believes in him might have eternal life.

"Thus, for God so loved the people, that he gave his only conceived son, so that everyone who believes in him might not perish, but might have eternal life. For God did not send the son into the world so that he might judge the people, but that the people through him might be saved.

"Those who believe in him are not judged. But those not believing have already been judged, because they have not believed in the name of the only conceived son of God. Moreover, this is the judgment, that the light has come into the world and people loved the darkness rather than the light, for their deeds were evil.

"For everyone practicing evil hates the light and does not come to the light, so their works may not be exposed. However, those practicing the truth come to the light, that their works might appear, that in God they have been done."

After these things, Jesus and his followers came into the land of Judea. And he was staying there with them and was baptizing. Moreover, John was also baptizing in Aenon near Salim because many waters were there. And they were coming, also being baptized, for John was not yet cast into the prison.

Therefore, a question arose out of the followers of John with Jews about purification. And they came to John and said to him, "teacher, he who was with you beyond the Jordan, to whom you have borne witness, look he baptizes and all come to him." And John answered and said, "one is able to receive nothing, if it is not given to them out of heaven.

"Yourselves, you bear witness to me that I said, I am not the Messiah but that I am sent before him. He that is having the bride is the bridegroom. Moreover, the friend of the bridegroom who stands listening for him, rejoices with joy because of the voice of the bridegroom. Therefore, this my joy is fulfilled.

"It is necessary for him to increase. However, me to decrease. He who comes from above is above all. He who is out of the earth is from the earth and, speaks from the earth. He who comes out of heaven is above all. What he has seen and heard, this he testifies. But no one receives his testimony.

"Those who have received the testimony of him, have set to their seal, that God is true. For whom God sent, the word of God speaks, for he does not give the spirit by measure. The father loves the son and has given all things into his hand. Those that believe in the son have eternal life. However, those who disobey the son will not see life, but the wrath of God remains on them."
