Good News According to John

[ a translation from the Greek ]
Chapter 11
Now, a certain man was sick, Lazarus of Bethany, from the village of Mary and her sister Martha. Moreover, it was Mary who anointed the Lord with perfumed oil and wiped his feet with her hair, whose brother Lazarus was sick.
So the sisters sent to him saying, "Look Lord, whom you love is sick."
Then Jesus having heard said, "This sickness isn't unto death, but for the glory of God, that the son of God might be glorified by it."
Now, Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus. So, when he heard that he was sick, then indeed, he remained two days in the place where he was.
Then after this, he said to the followers, "Let us go into Judea again."
The followers said to him, "Teacher, just now the Jews were seeking to stone you and, are you going there again?"
Jesus answered, "Are there not twelve hours in the day? If anyone walks in the day he doesn't stumble, because he sees the light of this world. But if anyone walks in the night they stumble, because the light isn't in them."
These things he said and after this, he said to them, "Our friend Lazarus has fallen asleep, but I go that I might wake him."
Then his followers said, "Lord, if he has fallen asleep he will get well."
Now, Jesus had spoken of his death, but they thought he spoke of the rest of sleep.
So, then Jesus said to them freely, "Lazarus died. And I rejoice for your sake that I wasn't there, that you might believe. But let us go to him."
Then Thomas called Didymus said to the fellow followers, "let us also go, that we might die with him."
Then Jesus having come, found him having already been four days in the tomb. Now, Bethany was near Jerusalem, about fifteen stadia [1.45 miles] away.
Moreover, many of the Jews had come unto Martha and Mary, that they might effectively console them about their brother. Then when Martha heard that Jesus was coming, she met him. But Mary was sitting in the house.
Then Martha said to Jesus, "Lord, if you had been here, my brother wouldn't have died. But nevertheless, even now I know that whatever you might ask of God, God will give you."
Jesus said to her, "Your brother will rise again."
Martha said to him, "I know that in the last day, he will rise again in the resurrection."
Jesus said to her, "I am the resurrection and the life. Those who believe in me, even if they die, they will live. And everyone who lives and believes in me, won't ever die, forever. Do you believe this?"
She said to him, "Yes Lord, I have believed that you are the Messiah, the son of God, who comes into the world."
And having said these things, she went away and called Mary her sister secretly saying, "The teacher has come and calls you."
Then when she heard, she rose up quickly and came to him. Jesus hadn't yet come into the village, but was still in the place where Martha had met him. Then the Jews being with her in the house and consoling her, having seen Mary, that she quickly rose up and went out, supposed she was going to the tomb the she might weep there.
So when she came to where Jesus was, Mary having seen him, fell down at his feet saying to him, "Lord, if you had been here my brother wouldn't have died."
Then Jesus, when he saw her weeping and the Jews who came with her weeping, deeply groaned in spirit and was himself troubled. And he said, "Where have you laid him?"
They said to him, "Lord, come and see."
Jesus wept.
So the Jews said, "Look how he loved him."
But some of them said, "Wasn't this man able, who had opened the eyes of the blind, also to have caused that this one shouldn't have died?"
Then Jesus, again groaning in himself, came to the tomb. Now, it was a cave and a stone was lying on it.
Jesus said, "Take away the stone."
Martha, the sister of the one having died said to him, "Lord, he stinks, for it is already four days."
Jesus said to her, "Didn't I say to you that if you should believe, you will see the glory of God?"
So, they took away the stone.
Then Jesus lifted his eyes upward to heaven and said, "Father, I thank you that you heard me. And I knew that you always hear me, but on account of the crowd who stand around I said it, that they might believe that you sent me."
And having said these things, he cried out in a loud voice, "Lazarus, come forth!"
He who had been dead came forth, bound at the hands and the feet with linen straps and his face with a handkerchief bound about.
Jesus said to them, "Unbind him and let him go."
Then many of the Jews, who came to Mary and saw what he did, believed in him. But some of them went to the Pharisees and told them what Jesus had done.
Then the chief priests and the Pharisees gathered together a council and said, "What are we to do? For this man does many signs. If we thusly allow him, all will believe in him. And the Romans will come and take away from us, both our place and nation."
And Caiaphas, a certain one of them, being high priest the same year, said to them, "You all know nothing. Nor do you consider that it is profitable for us that one man should die for the people and not that the whole nation should perish."
Now, this he said not of himself, but being high priest that year, he prophesied that Jesus was about to die for the nation. And not only for the nation but also, the children of God who having been scattered, he might gather together into one.
Therefore, from that day they took council together, that they might kill him. So, Jesus no longer walked publicly among the Jews but went away from there unto a region near the wilderness, to a city called Ephraim. And he stayed there with the followers.
Now, it was near the Passover of the Jews. And many went up out of the region to Jerusalem before the Passover, that they might purify themselves.
Moreover, they were seeking Jesus, standing in the temple and saying among each other, "What does it seem to you, that he won't come to the feast?"
Now, the chief priests and Pharisees had given a command, that if anyone should know where he is, they should show them so that they might seize him.
