Good News According to John

[ a translation from the Greek ]
Chapter 12
Which then Jesus, six days before the Passover, came to Bethany where Lazarus was who Jesus raised from the dead. Then they made him a supper there and Martha was serving. And Lazarus was one of those reclining with him.
Then Mary, having taken a pound of fragrant perfume ointment, pure of nard of great price, anointed the feet of Jesus and wiped his feet with her hair. Now, the house was filled with the fragrance of the perfume ointment.
Then Judas Iscariot, one of his followers who was about to betray him, because of this said, "Why wasn't the fragrant ointment sold for three hundred denarii [a common laborer's wages for a year or more] and given to the poor?"
But he said this not because he cared for the poor, but he was a thief and that having the moneybag, he used to pilfer what was put into it.
And Jesus said, "Leave her alone so that she might keep it for the day of my burial. For you always have the poor with you, but me you haven't always."
Now, a great crowd of the Jews knew that he was there. And they didn't come because of Jesus only, but also that they might see Lazarus whom he had raised from the dead.
Moreover, the chief priests took counsel that they might also kill Lazarus. Because by reason of him, many of the Jews were going away and were believing in Jesus.
On the next day, a great crowd had come to the feast, who having heard that Jesus was coming into Jerusalem, took branches of palms and went out to meet him and were crying, "Hosanna! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord." And, "The king of Israel."
Then having found Jesus a young donkey, he sat upon it, as it is written: "Fear not, daughter of Zion, your king comes sitting on a colt of a donkey."
These things the followers didn't know of him from the first, but when Jesus was glorified, they then personally remembered that these things were written of him and these things they did to him.
Then the crowd bore witness, being with him when he called Lazarus out of the tomb and raised him from the dead. Also, on account of this, the crowd met him because they heard of him having done the sign.
Therefore, the Pharisees said among themselves, "Don't you see that you gain nothing? Look, the people have gone after him!"
Now, there were certain Greeks among those having gone up that they might worship at the feast. Then these came to Philip who was from Bethsaida of Galilee.
And they asked him saying "Sir, we desire to see Jesus."
Philip went to tell Andrew and Andrew and Philip came to tell Jesus.
And Jesus answered them saying, "The hour has come that the son of man should be glorified. Truly, truly, I say to you, if the grain of wheat fallen into the ground shouldn't die, it alone remains. But if it should die it bears much fruit.
"Those who love their life will lose it. And those who hate their life in this world will keep it unto eternal life. If anyone serves, let them follow and where I am, there also will my servant be.
"If anyone serves me, the father will highly value them. Now, my soul is troubled and what will I say? 'Father, save me from this hour.' But on account of this, I came to this hour. Father, glorify your name."
Then a voice came from heaven, "I both glorified and will glorify again."
So, the crowd having stood and having heard said, "There has been thunder."
Others said, "A messenger has spoken to him."
Jesus answered and said, "This voice hasn't come because of me, but because of you. Now is the judgment of this world. Now the ruler of this world will be cast out. And I, if I be lifted up from the earth, will draw all to myself."
Now this he said, signifying by what death he was about to die.
Then the crowd answered him, "We have learned from the law that the Messiah remains forever. And how do you say it is necessary for the son of man to be lifted up? Who is this son of man?"
Then Jesus said to them, "Yet a little while the light is with you. Walk while you have the light, so that darkness might not overtake you. And those walking in the darkness don't know where they're going. While you have the light, believe in the light, so that you might become sons of light."
These things Jesus spoke and going away, he was hidden from them. But though he had done so many signs before them, they didn't believe in him. That the word of Isaiah the prophet might be fulfilled, which said: "Lord, who has believed our report and to whom was the arm of the Lord revealed?"
Because of this they couldn't believe, for again Isaiah said: "He has blinded their eyes and hardened their inward beings, that they shouldn't see with the eyes and understand with the inner being and turn and, I would heal them."
Isaiah said these things when he saw his glory and spoke about him.
Although indeed, even many of the rulers believed in him. But on account of the Pharisees, they didn't confess, so that they wouldn't be put out of the synagogue. For they loved the glory of men more than the glory of God.
Then Jesus cried out and said, "Those who believe in me, believe not in me, but in him who sent me. And those who see me, see him who sent me. A light I have come into the world, so that everyone who believes in me shouldn't remain in the darkness.
"And if anyone hears my words and doesn't vigilantly keep them, I don't judge them. For I didn't come that I might judge the people, but that I might save the people. Those who reject me and don't receive my words, have him who judges them.
"The word which I spoke, that will judge them in the last day. For I didn't speak from myself, but the father himself who sent me, gave commandment what I should say and what I should speak. And I know that his commandment is eternal life. Therefore, what I speak, as the father has said to me, so I speak."
