Good News According to John

[ a translation from the Greek ]

Chapter 7

After these things, Jesus walked in Galilee, for he didn't want to walk in Judea, for the Jews were searching to kill him. Now, the feast of the Jews, of Booths, was near.

So his brothers said to him, "Depart from hear and go into Judea, so that your followers will also see your works that you do. For no one does anything in secret while he himself seeks to be publicly known. If you do these things, show yourself to the world."

For even his brothers hadn't believed in him.

Therefore, Jesus said to them, "My time has not yet come, but your time is always ready. The world is unable to hate you, but it hates me, because I bear witness about it, that the works of it are evil. You go up to the feast. I am not going up to the feast yet, for my time has not been fulfilled."

Now, having said these things to them, he remained in Galilee. However, when his brothers had gone up to the feast, he then also went up, not openly but as in secret.

Therefore, the Jews were searching for him at the feast and were saying, "Where is he?"

And there was much grumbling about him among the crowds. Indeed, some said "He is good."

But others said, "No, he deceives the crowd."

Moreover, no one spoke freely about him, because of the fear of the Jews. Moreover, now it already being in the middle of the feast, Jesus went up into the temple and was teaching.

The Jews were then wondering saying, "How does this one know letters, never having learned?"

Accordingly, Jesus answered them and said, "My teaching isn't of myself, but of him who sent me. If anyone desires to do his will, they will know about the teaching, whether it is from God or from myself I speak. Those who speak of themselves, seek their own glory.

"But the one seeking glory of the one who sent him, he is true and unrighteousness isn't in him. Hasn't Moses given the law to you and not one of you keeps the law? Why do you seek to kill me?"

The crowd answered, "You have an evil spirit, who seeks to kill you?"

Jesus answered and said to them, "One work I did and you all wonder. For this reason Moses has given you circumcision, not that it is from Moses, but by the fathers. Also, you circumcise a man on the Sabbath.

"If a man receives circumcision on the Sabbath, so that the law of Moses might not be broken, are you angry because I made a man entirely sound on the Sabbath? Don't judge according to sight, but judge righteous judgment."

Then some of those from Jerusalem said, "Isn't this whom they seek to kill? And look, he speaks freely and they say nothing to him, not ever? The rulers truly have recognized that this is the Messiah. We know where this man is from. But the Messiah, whenever he might come, no one knows where he is from."

Then Jesus cried out in the temple teaching and saying, "You know me and you know where I am from and I haven't come of myself, but the one having sent me is true, whom you don't know. But I know him because I am from him and, he sent me."

Therefore, they were seeking to seize him, but no one laid a hand upon him, because his hour hadn't yet come.

Now, many from the crowd believed in him and were saying, "The Messiah when he comes, will he do more than this man has done?"

The Pharisees heard the crowd grumbling these things about him and the Pharisees sent the chief priests and officers, that they might seize him.

Then Jesus said, "I am with you yet a little while and then I go to the one who sent me. You will seek me and won't find me and where I am, you aren't able to come."

So the Jews said among themselves, "Where is he to go that we won't find him? Is he about to go to the dispersion among the Greeks and to teach the Greeks? What is this word that he said, 'You will seek me and won't find me and where I am, you aren't able to come?'"

Now in the last of the feast, the great day, Jesus stood and cried out saying, "If anyone thirsts, let them come to me and drink. Those who believe in me, as the scripture said, out of their innermost being will flow rivers of living water."

Now, he said this about the spirit whom those believing were about to receive; for the spirit hadn't yet been given because Jesus wasn't yet glorified.

Then some from the crowd, having heard these words said, "Truly, this is the prophet."

Others said "This is the Messiah."

But others said, "Indeed, the Messiah doesn't come from Galilee. The scripture says out of the seed of David and from Bethlehem, the village where David was, the Messiah comes."

So, a division occurred in the crowd because of him. Moreover, some of them desired to seize him, but no on laid a hand on him.

Then the officers came to the chief priests and Pharisees and they said to them, "Why didn't you bring him?"

The officers answered, "A man never spoke thus, as this man speaks."

Then the Pharisees answered them, "Have you also been deceived? None of the rulers have believed on him or any of the Pharisees. But this crowd not knowing the law, are accursed."

Nicodemus said to them, the one who came to him by night, the former being one of them, "Does our law judge a man if it hasn't first heard from him and known what he does?"

They answered him and said, "Aren't you also from Galilee? Search and see that a prophet is not raised out of Galilee."

And each went to his own home. But Jesus went to the Mount of Olives.
